All benefits are pro-rated depending on when in the year one joins the scheme.

* A member has the option of downgrading their option at any time but may only upgrade without medical underwriting once per year effective from the 1st of January the following year.

Discovery Coastal Core and Classic Core

These are their Hospital plans. Both have unlimited Hospital benefits but cover claims at different rates;

* Coastal at NHRPL (National Health Reference Price List)
* Classic at 2X NHRPL.

The Hospital bill would be paid in full because of tariff agreements they have with the Hospital groups. To have the Surgeon and Anaesthetist bill fully covered, the member would have to use a practitioner who is contracted to charge the DHR (Discovery Health Rate) or buy a gap product that will pay the difference.

They both have the same Chronic Medication benefit as well as Emergency Evacuation

Discovery Coastal Saver and Classic Saver

Both of these plans have unlimited Hospital benefits but cover claims at different rates.

All day-to-day claims e.g. doctors consultations, medicines, etc, are paid from a savings account.

The add-on benefit of the savings account is a 50% payment towards GP consultations paid by the medical aid if they are contracted in to Discovery, so only 50% would be paid from the savings. Any portion of the savings not used would be carried forward to the following year. They both have the same Chronic Medication benefit as well as Emergency Evacuation i.e. Ambulance and Helicopter, etc.

Discovery Classic Comprehensive

This plan has unlimited Hospital benefits paid at 2X NHRPL (National Health Reference Price List) rate.

Claims submitted to the medical aid would first be paid out of savings until that is exhausted and then from the Threshold benefit. The add-on benefit of the savings account is a 50% payment towards GP consultations paid by the medical aid if they are contracted in to Discovery, so only 50% would be paid from the savings. Any portion of the savings not used would be carried forward to the following year.

There is a small gap between the savings limit and the Threshold benefit kicking in, called the self-payment gap, during which expenses must be paid by the member but the bills must still be submitted to the medical aid. Once all your accumulated day-to-day expenses (irrespective of who pays them) reach the Threshold Excess, it will pay all day-to-day expenses until the end of the year, subject to sub-limits. This plan also has an extended Chronic Medication benefit.

What Are The Symptoms Of Colon Cancer

Colon cancer symptoms are not apparent all times, in particular in the initial stages of development of cancer cells. Learning briefly about what is colon cancer helps you in better understanding of colon cancer symptoms.

Colon forms major part of the digestive system of the body and plays an important role in absorption of essential nutrition and water, thus facilitating good health. Further, colon also assists in removing the toxic substance and body waste through stool or as stool. Major portion of large intestine is comprised of Colon. Development of cancerous cells or malignant tumors in the colon is referred as colon cancer. Let us see the colon cancer symptoms in detail.

As stated earlier, colon cancer symptoms are not apparent in the initial stages and can be detected only when it is progressed to advanced stage. However, with deep and intense screening, it is possible to detect the signs of colon cancer.

Symptoms of colon cancer can be classified into two types namely local symptoms and systemic symptoms. Former is associated with digestive system and the later affects the entire body. Some of the symptoms of colon cancer found to be sings of other health conditions and illnesses, in particular the local symptoms. Proper diagnosis helps in detecting the cancerous growth.

Bloody stool: Blood discharge in the stool is the most common and apparent symptom of Colon cancer. However, bloody discharge is associated with some other health conditions. Moreover, the stool gets discharged in red color like bloody discharge when you eat beetroot or watermelon. Eventually, the condition can be diagnosed by Fecal occult blood test.

Constipation: It is rare sign of colon cancer and it is associated with many digestive illnesses. Constipation at frequent intervals and chronic constipation might be dangerous, because such condition is usually developed when the growth of cancer cells obstruct discharging stool.

Diarrhea / watery stool: Since the colon is obstructed by cancer tissues, it becomes difficult in discharging normal stool and lead towards watery stool, ribbon like stools and chronic diarrhea.

Unusual bowel movements: Irritable and unusual bowel movement with swollen abdomen is one of the obvious symptoms of colon cancer, where there will be a sensation of fullness of stomach, even when it is empty. And it is caused due to growth of cancer cells in colon and digestive system.

Fatigue: Fatigue and general weakness is a common problem experienced by almost everyone. But, continuous fatigue and weariness for several days is the apparent symptom of a severe health condition. Colon cancer symptoms include fatigue associated with anemic condition which is caused due to loss of blood in stool and diarrhea.

Pain in the abdomen: Difficult in discharging stool, bowel movements, fullness of stomach, blocked digestive system due to tumor cells, etc lead towards abdominal pain.

Other colon cancer symptoms include the following:
Unexpected and accidental weight loss without involvement of diet or any other weight loss plans
Loss of energy and extreme weariness
Anaemic condition or iron deficiency with much low counts of red blood cells
Loss of appetite
Jaundice

Since most of the colon cancer symptoms can be realized only in the advanced stage, where the tumors affect the entire digestive system, it is good to get appropriate diagnosis with several medical examinations, when one or more signs mentioned above are experienced. Earlier detection of colon cancer can prevent the development of cancer cells and enhance the survival rate.

Common types of dental fillings

Oral care and hygiene are utterly important, being a crucial part of our health. Unfortunately, many people neglect the importance of proper oral hygiene and regular dentist appointments, which leads to various dental problems. Taking good care of our teeth and gums is as essential as finding the right dentist, one that is able to provide us with all the care and services that we might need. To that extent, it is imperative that we become knowledgeable when it comes to what we can do for a good oral care, but also when it comes to choosing our dentist. For instance, if you need a Las Vegas dentist, then you should take your time and research the market well, making sure that each option you find is being weighed thoroughly. Dental care offers a lot of options, not only when it comes to which dentist in Las Vegas you want to book an appointment to, but also as far as treatment is concerned. Dental fillings, for example, give patience several alternatives and it’s always best for you to also have some knowledge of your options, as opposed to leaving the choice on your dentist.

There are different types of dental fillings because they serve different purposes. They depend on the location where you need the filling, the severity of the decay, but also on the cost and your coverage. Some insurances cover all types of dental fillings, but others don’t and, like it or not, budget is an issue to be factored in when it comes to dental work, regardless of the Las Vegas dentist of your choice. One of the most common types of dental fillings are gold fillings, which are non-corrosive and solid. They are also more aesthetically attractive than other types, but the down side is that they cost a lot. Not only is their price about 10 times higher than the price of other options, but you will also have to visit your dentist in Las Vegas more than once, which means more doctor’s bills. Silver amalgam fillings are a cheaper alternative to gold fillings, but few people actually choose them because they don’t look that great. Otherwise, they are quite durable.

Another very common type of dental fillings is the ceramic option. These fillings are made from porcelain and they look very pleasing. They are also quite durable and not very expensive. However, any Las Vegas dentist will warn that ceramic fillings can cause damage to the opposing teeth, because chances are that the porcelain becomes rough. Composite fillings are also quite common, even though they are not as durable as metal fillings, because they can perfectly match the color of patients’ teeth. Last, but not least, some patients choose glass ionomers, especially for kids, whose teeth are still changing, as they last no more than 5 years. They are popular because the glass and acrylic fillings release fluoride and this helps with the prevention of tooth decay. Although it helps to have all this information about different types of fillings, their advantages and disadvantages, it’s still wise to consult with your dentist in Las Vegas before making a choice.

Science & social responsibility in public health

Epidemiologists and environmental health researchers have a joint responsibility to acquire scientific knowledge that matters to public health and to apply the knowledge gained in public health practice. We examine the nature and source of these social responsibilities, discuss a debate in the epidemiological literature on roles and responsibilities, and cite approaches to environmental justice as reflective of them. At one level, responsibility refers to accountability, as in being responsible for actions taken. A deeper meaning of responsibility corresponds to commitment to the pursuit and achievement of a valued end

Public health ethics is on the map. In the past year, bioethicists and public health practitioners have begun to focus their critical attention on this complex and understudied topic. Much remains to be done. Childress et al. (2002), for example, describe their account of public health ethics as a rough conceptual map of a terrain with undefined boundaries.

Our focus will be on the responsibilities of epidemiologists, a choice made for several compelling reasons. Epidemiology sits at the center of the science and practice of environmental health, and more generally, at the center of public health. Although it is often referred to as a basic science of public health, epidemiology connects the acquisition of scientific knowledge with its application in preventive interventions, programs, and policies. This connection suggests a fundamental question: What are our responsibilities as epidemiologists? Do we, for example, have a joint responsibility to participate in science and to apply the knowledge gained? This is a key concern for us as researchers, health professionals, and as teachers.

The social responsibility of public health professionals is but one of many concerns in the broader picture of public health ethics. It is nevertheless a central concern. As Ogletree (1996) reminds us, responsibility is a concept particularly well suited to flame many key aspects of the ethics of professions faced with making decisions and taking actions in complex situations. These decisions often involve advanced technologies, high levels of specialization, and overlapping areas of expertise and concern among decision makers from diverse educational, political, and social backgrounds, precisely the situation in contemporary epidemiology and public health. In sum, responsibility organizes many (although not all) of public health’s ethical issues in terms appropriate for professional practitioners.

Responsibility has a deeper meaning as well, corresponding to commitment. To be responsible means to be committed to someone or to some thing. Being responsible in this deeper sense involves a commitment to positive action, to the pursuit and achievement of something of value, such as a social good (Jonas 1984). We will return to the notion of social goods in public health. For now, we want to emphasize that responsibility focuses attention on professional commitments

Finally, our inquiry is intended to assist all public health researchers who seek to define their social responsibilities. For those who are involved primarily in environmental health research, we can think of at least two connected and current topics–environmental justice and community-based participatory research.

Cystic Acne Cure – Get A Clear Complexion With These Home Remedies For Acne

If you have really bad acne, I’m guessing you’re looking for a cystic acne cure and looking for ways how to get clear skin. if you’re tired of the side effects like the dry, red, itchy skin that’s common with most OTC products, your should try some home remedies for acne instead. They are great ways for how to get a clear complexion and not only do they work great, but they’re all very gentle and won’t irritate your skin. On top of that, you’ll be saving yourself some money each and every month to boot.

My number one favorite cystic acne cure is and always will be using baking soda. You do this by just mixing some water or you can also mix in a little bit of sea salt and a tiny bit of baking powder. Either method works great, but I suggest not using the more complicated mixture more than once or twice a week.

Another great way how to get clear skin ties in with the first. After applying your baking soda mask, you should apply an apple cider vinegar toner. This helps the skin maintain its natural pH balance and it’s also very good at preventing breakouts.

Another good set of home remedies for acne involves honey and aspirin. This is another favorite because it packs quite a strong punch and is a great way to get a clear complexion. I suggest applying these separately, but people have used them together to great effect. Just smash the aspirin up, mix with some water, and apply to your face. After you’ve rinsed it off, apply some honey. The aspirin is a great exfoliator and also stop breakouts and the honey is anti bacterial and is a great moisturizer.

Stop using the typical cystic acne cures that are only good for making your face look terrible and don’t listen to typical “expert” opinion on how to get clear skin. To me, they seem to be more motivated by money rather than wanting to find a way to get a clear complexion. Try these home remedies for acne and you’ll see some good results.

The Signs Of Heart Attacks Your Bodys Alarm System

According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. Heart attacks kill about 460,000 Americans every year. People usually die within one hour of when symptoms start, but before they get to the hospital. If more people recognized the signs of heart attacks and acted sooner, more people would survive them.

One reason that people dont always recognize the warning signs of heart attacks is that they act differently. Even people who have had a heart attack before might not recognize another one because it could be completely different. The main thing to remember is that if you arent sure, have it checked out. It is better to have a false alarm than to not respond to the real thing. Quick response greatly increases your chances for surviving heart attacks.

Most heart attacks start out with some sort of discomfort to the chest.
It may not be the searing pain that you might expect from a heart attack, but there will probably be something. Some people have described before a squeezing sensation, or simply a pain or fullness. The pain may last for a few minutes, or it may come and go away and come back again.

Many people also experience some sort of pain in the upper area of the body during heart attacks. It may show up in the arms, back, neck, jaw, or stomach. If you have pain or even a mild discomfort in any of these areas you should have it checked out, especially if theres a history of heart disease in your family or if youve been diagnosed with heart problems. Many people try to wait this type of pain out, but it only gets worse. If you wait, you may be too late. Heart attacks arent something to wait around on. Make sure that you get help immediately.

There are many other symptoms of heart attacks that you can identify. Some people experience a cold sweat, nausea, or light-headedness. Most people also experience shortness of breath. There are many different symptoms that you can identify as warning signals of heart attacks. The most important thing is that you react quickly to these symptoms. Even if you dont like doctors or hospitals, a short stay in one is better than leaving immediately.

On top of learning warning signs of heart attacks, you can take preventative measures to keep yourself safe. Exercise properly, eat right, and see your doctor for regular checkups. Remember that heart disease doesnt mean your life will be cut short undiagnosed and untreated heart disease will put you on the fast track for heart attacks.

The Psychological Effects Of Living With Eczema

Much is written about the physical condition of eczema, and its treatment options, but very often the psychological aspects are glossed over and treated as secondary. In truth, in both young and old patients the psychological aspects of dealing with eczema can be far more devastating than the disease itself.

Living with eczema is often more about the psychological issues than the physical ones. The itching and soreness can be soothed with creams and salves, but the visible effects of the disease are difficult to get away from. This can be particularly devastating for young children dealing with eczema.

There are many unfounded stigmas attached to eczema that are based solely on the way the condition looks rather than on facts. Eczema is not contagious, but many children will shy away from those with the condition fearing that touching it will spread the disease to them. This is not the case as eczema is not a contagious disease. A bigger problem is that many parents do not know what eczema is and often warn unsuspecting children about playing or touching another child who has this condition.

Children can be quite cruel in their teasing and coupled with their parents lack of information on the problem can be lead to believe that eczema is caused by a general lack of cleanliness which couldnt be further from the truth. Education can go a long way in solving many of the childhood issues in dealing with this disease but it often needs to begin with the parents of the children.

Adults suffer just as many psychological effects in dealing with eczema. Eczema on the scalp can be covered by hats. On the arms and legs it can be covered by long sleeves or pant legs, and the body is generally kept covered with clothing as well, but some areas such as the hands and face are difficult to cover and the patient must deal with the feelings of embarrassment of when others shy away from contact.

This can be magnified in cases where the patient is in a new relationship, or looking to develop relationships as the fear of uncovering areas of eczema can thwart all desires for romance. People involved in a relationship with someone suffering with eczema must have a great deal of compassion and do their best to show their partners that they are loved and are beautiful in order to overcome the worry and fear of being exposed to ridicule.

Adults with eczema often shy away from social events that may require exposure of the affected areas such as swimming pools, and beaches, and can often lead to a rather sheltered life as it begins to take over other social events as well even when no threat of exposure is imminent. In some more severe cases it may even be advisable to seek the advice and counsel of a good psychotherapist to help overcome the unreasonable feelings of inadequacy. It is important for the patient to realize that this is a disease, not a condition they bring on themselves, and is not caused by anything they did or didnt do.

Is Colon Cancer Caused By Constipation Or Emotional Trauma

We know that colon cancer is the second leading cause of deaths in the United States. In 1999, of all the cancer deaths, 16% of them were colon cancer. But where did the other cancers originate – lung, prostate, breast, lymph, pancreatic, stomach? Did they also start in the colon where the colon toxin simply migrated to these regions?

Many colon cancers develop slowly over time and can be attributed to constipation. And, constipation can be related, in most cases, to past emotional trauma or experiences. Constipation that occurs over a long period of time creates toxins that continually migrate into your blood and into your body cells and tissues.

It is difficult to trace where cancers originate. Medical professionals, when treating a patient, are not really concerned with where the cancer or illness came from. They are more interested in how to treat the disease or the symptoms with drugs or surgery.

Many doctors do not go looking for the cause of your problem. They don’t have the time for this research. In fact, they normally will not tell you what you need to do to prevent your illness. Sometimes the reason they will not tell you is they just do not know.

Its becoming more a nutritionist’s or naturopathic doctor’s job to tell you what foods and supplements you need to eat to prevent and to overcome specific illnesses and what to eat to eliminate or stop constipation.

People are dying at all ages with a variety of diseases. Why is it that so many people are dying of heart diseases, blood diseases, cancers, autoimmune diseases and the list goes on. It has been know for a longtime why diseases occur and what you can do to prevent it.

These death producing illnesses are a result of how and what we eat, the type of water we drink, and the air pollution we breathe. But perhaps one of the most important causes of diseases that are seldom discussed comes from the thoughts we think.

What is it that causes our behavior? A behavior that is harmful to others or ourselves in ways that affects our health and life. Why do people smoke when they know it causes Cancer? Why do people drink coffee when they know caffeine affects their adrenal gland, which eventually leads to exhaustion? Why is it that people eat sugar or white floor products when they know it has untold health effects beyond diabetes?

The answer is simple, but many people are not willing to accept this idea. All illness originates from repressed traumatic memories resulting from early life trauma.

Dr Arthur Janov explains this clearly in his book, 1996, Why You Get Sick How You Get Well.

“Over the last thirty years I have learned a great deal about humans and what drives them. As trite as it may seem, what I have found is a single yet complex emotion called love. Not the romantic love of novels, but a fundamental love – the love of a parent for a child. When a child lacks love and nurturing, no matter how that lack is manifest, it creates pain, and if this pain is not “felt” or integrated into the system, it will in turn cause physical and emotional illness in later life.”

Changing ones thoughts, behavior, and life style is difficult to do and requires psychological help. Not too many people are willing to do this unless they are force to by life situations. Unfortunately, this is what is necessary to reduce or eliminate illness. This is what is necessary to bring on a feeling of well-being way into your old age – at 80, at 90, at 100, and well beyond that.

How many people are willing to devote the time and money to start eating the right foods and change their behavior and lifestyle? This is the first step in reducing or eliminating constipation or any other illness and for dealing with past emotional trauma.

Know About The Types Of Heart Disease

Heart disease is a category of illnesses that affects the regular functionality of the heart that can start from different causes. These diseases cause damage the different muscles and blood vessels connected to the heart and affects its ability to work properly. Since the 1900’s, cardiac disease has been recorded as the leading cause of death in the United States, England, Wales and Canada. Cardiac disease is responsible for killing someone every 34 seconds in America and over 60 million Americans have some form of cardiovascular disfunction. There are many individuals who are uneducated about its causes, symptoms and ways of preventing it affecting you and your family.

There are several category of cardiac disease which all have the same type of symptoms and treatment methods. Ischaemic Heart Disease affects the heart by minimizing the blood circulation to the cardiac muscle. Ischaemic Heart Disease displays symptoms such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, swelling of the legs and can also reduce an individuals ability to exercise.

Coronary Heart Disease is a disease that causes the artery and the blood vessels leading to the heart to tighten. This takes place as a result of plaque accumulation made up from fatty material, scar tissues and calcium. These vessels transport precious blood and oxygen to other vital organs so when they become obstructed the cardiac muscle is not properly fed with enough blood to perform its usual function. Warning signs include severe chest pain, heart attacks and even cardiac arrest. There are particular factors that maximizes the possibility of developing Coronary Heart Disease. Obesity, High blood pressure, Diabetes, smoking, high stress level, insufficient physical activity, high cholesterol level and in some women menopause.

A valvular Heart Disease is any disease which affects one or more of the valves in the heart. This illness can either be contract from birth or it can be attained over the course of a person’s life. If the disease does not turn out to be severe then medications are available to correct the ailment, but if it becomes critical then an operation will have to take place in order to either repair the valve or replace it. Valvular heart disease can be caused from rheumatic fever, hypereosinophilic syndrome, bacterial infection and cancer, just to name some.

Hypertensive Heart Disease includes any problems that cause high blood pressure. Symptoms of hypertension include, bloating, irregular pulse rate, fatigue, unexpected weight gain, frequent urination at nights, shortness of breath. Cardiovascular disease affects the cardiovascular system by causing damage to the arteries and veins.

Other forms of these diseases are Inflammatory heart disease which inflames the heart’s surrounding tissues, Cardiomyopathy which deteriorates the muscles of the heart, and congestive heart failure which occurs when the heart is unable to provide sufficient amounts of blood throughout the body to fulfill its needs. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle which includes regular exercise, upkeeping a nutritious diet and eliminating bad habits such as smoking, can lower the chances of someone developing cardiac disease. Various treatments can also be used to monitor the functions of the heart and sometimes depending on how devastating the damage is, surgery may be required.
