Scalp Eczema – The Main Causes For Eczema On the Scalp and How to Prevent It

Scalp eczema is becoming increasingly common due to many environmental factors irritating the scalp. Here we will be looking at what causes eczema on the scalp and the best ways to treat and prevent it.

With the increasing use of hair products and hairstyles that require straighteners and curling tongs, it is no wonder that the scalp takes a beating and those who are prone to, or already have eczema on other parts of their body, find that they develop eczema on the scalp also.

The scalp is a very delicate network of skin and the use of harsh chemicals and/or excessive heat, can cause irritation. Following are some of the worst hair products to use on a sensitive scalp, in order of severity.

* Bleach
* Perming lotion
* Relaxant
* Hair Dye
* Hair spray
* High heat straighteners
* High heat blow drying

The first 3 hair products can actually cause permanent damage to the scalp, if the scalp responds badly to the chemical and/or if the treatment is left on for too long or is incorrectly prepared.

To avoid eczema on the scalp, it is best to avoid all of these hair products for at least 6 months until your scalp has had a chance to heal and strengthen. Of course moderate blow drying and hairspray/gel is fine but only in small doses, if you want your scalp to repair.

To increase your chances further for full scalp repair, it is a good idea to use organic shampoo. This type of shampoo contains only natural ingredients where ordinary shampoos contain some harsh chemicals in the ingredients to create a lather so, although you will find that an organic shampoo does not lather quite so efficiently, you are safe in the knowledge that your scalp is protected.

In some cases, if the eczema on the scalp is very severe, it may be necessary to use a medicated shampoo until the eczema has healed. In this case, you may need to ask your doctor for advice. Alternatively you could ask your local pharmacist for eczema shampoo. There are some tar-based shampoos that work very well.

These days, image is all important and the health of our body seems to come second. Many people who have this mindset soon regret it when they are left with a scalp that is ravaged and in some cases, irreparable.

Treat your scalp like you would treat the skin on your face and you will reap the rewards with a healthy, flake-free scalp and luscious hair.
